Macallan Edition No.2

Macallan Edition N0.2 (70cl)

The Macallan Edition No.2 is the second installment in the Speyside distillery’s limited ‘Editions Series’. This delightful expression is a collaboration between Macallan master blender, Bob Dalgarno, and Spanish chefs Josep, Joan, and Jordi Roca. It is a fruity and complex dram created from a combination of sherry butts, puncheons, and refill hogsheads and the results are astounding. As a limited-edition whisky, this one is becoming rarer by the day.

The Macallan Edition No. 2

A creative collaboration between our Master Whisky Maker and the three Roca brothers – co-founders of a world-renowned restaurant, El Celler de Can Roca – Edition No. 2 unites these four masters in one spirit.
The distinctive and dynamic character of Edition No. 2 has been shaped not only by the use of seven exceptional oak cask types from four different bodegas but by the creative spirit of each of the four collaborators; combining flavors to reflect each of their distinctive personalities in the resulting whisky.

    Golden syrup.

  • NOSE

Treacle, ginger, toffee apples, and rich fruits. Layers of vanilla open into tropical fruits and subtle greenwood.

Full, slow, warm, and wonderfully viscous.

  • ABV:

Warm with spice as cracked black pepper and cloves join with hints of chocolate, brown sugar, oak, and nuts. Finally, licorice and brandy snaps come through.

Every Macallan single malt reveals the unrivaled commitment to the mastery of wood and spirit for which The Macallan has been known since it was established in 1824. It is an expression of our enduring desire to go beyond the ordinary, to seek out the extraordinary, and create peerless single malts.

    Hennessy VS Cognac

Our reputation for the extraordinary is characterized by the exceptional oak casks for which The Macallan is renowned. Sourced, crafted, toasted, and seasoned under the watchful eye of the Master of Wood, the hand-picked casks are delivered to the demanding specifications of the Whisky Mastery Team. It is the oak that makes the greatest contribution to the quality, natural color, and distinctive aromas and flavors at the heart of this single malt whisky.

Once filled, the maturing spirit remains undisturbed in the same casks for the necessary number of years it needs to be worthy of its destined Macallan expression. It is these oak casks that make the greatest contribution to the quality, natural color, and distinctive aromas and flavors which lie at the heart of The Macallan single malt.

The worst thing about finding a whisky that you like that’s limited is that the window to buy more than one bottle is small, so you have a terrible decision to make… Buy one or two bottles and move on and spend your pennies on other things without the pressure to buy or bite the bullet and pony up enough dough to stock the cupboard with as many bottles as the bank account allows.

The problem I have with Macallan Edition No. 2. It’s just one of those whiskies that clicked with my taste buds and made me want a few more bottles for the cupboard and then it gave me the fear of it running out so there I go, scampering around online shops to secure a few more bottles, just in case. The fear.

There’s no doubt that in the world of limited editions (whatever the product) there’s a hardcore group that goes out and buys up all the stock they can to flip (sell at an inflated price in the second-hand market) for a quick profit and Macallan is a brand that always appears on the flipper’s list. It used to always be the 18 Sherry Oak, but now it seems it’s been joined by the Edition range. And for good reason. (And these are the people you’re up against when you want to secure those extra few bottles before they hit the secondhand market).

For the money when it was released, the Macallan Edition No. 2 was EPIC!

As a NAS there’s always going to be the argument that you don’t know what you’re buying in terms of age, but as a drinker, not an investor, or a trainspotter, the one guiding principle that makes me want to buy more than one bottle is ‘Does it taste good?’ The Macallan Edition No.2 does, and then some.

Other reviews on here will tell you all you need to know about the nose, flavor, and finish (all 3 are wonderful) but few will touch on the emotional tug that finding a great bottle has on the drinker.

For the £75 on a release or thereabouts, Macallan made something rather special, a whisky that does all the usual things you want a great Macallan to do but at an affordable(ish) price. They get a lot of stick for releasing whisky that is priced over the odds but when they release something like this we can forgive them their sins.

A truly beautiful whisky that gave me pleasure and fear in equal measure.
