Buffalo Trace’s quite popular Eagle Rare bourbon normally comes in two flavors – the regular 10 year old and the once a year 17 year old from the Antique Collection.
Joining these two in recent years has been a very limited and higher end bottling known as Double Eagle Very Rare Bourbon. It has now returned for a 2021 release.
The Double Eagle Very Rare Bourbon (2021) offering, according to those behind it, is the third in the series that first started back in 2019.
It continues the standard theme of this bourbon, being 20 years old and having aged on the lower floors of Buffalo Trace’s historic warehouses.
Where it does vary somewhat is in the proof, being 101 this time around, in what’s described as a “nod to the original proof of Eagle Rare Bourbon when it was first released in 1975.”
Also, as normally accompanies this American whiskey, it is “bottled in a luxurious crystal decanter and arrives in a silver presentation box.
The presentation box consists of two sliding doors, imprinted with a design similar to eagle feathers.
The sliding doors open to a spotlight of the stunning, hand-blown crystal decanter, which features two sculptured crystal glass eagles, one inside of the bottle and one serving as the stopper.”
Only 199 of these bottles, each priced around $2,000 per 750 ml bottle, were produced and each bottle includes an individually numbered letter of authenticity noting it is from this specific collection.
It will come available starting this month. Official tasting notes from the brand make mention of “a nose of dark cherries and creamy caramel, on the palate, dark chocolate, smoked oak and dates, followed by a long, complex finish of cinnamon, anise and oak.”
The Eagle Rare brand, for those unfamiliar with it, is distilled, aged and bottled at Buffalo Trace Distillery.
Named after America’s emblem, Eagle Rare was created in 1975, as the United States prepared to celebrate its bicentennial of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

Nose: Complex aromas of toffee, hints of orange peel, herbs, honey, leather and oak.
Taste: Bold, dry, oaky flavors with notes of candied almonds and very rich cocoa.
Finish: Dry and lingering.
“Easily one of the most tactile yet assertive and expressive bourbons I’ve tasted in the last two years; fasten your seatbelts.”
When Buffalo Trace Distillery makes a surprise bourbon release, it tends to make a big splash. Bourbon lovers across the world nearly lost their minds when this happened two years ago.
That release was Double Eagle Very Rare. Today this Eagle Rare expression takes front and center again. Whereas, a 2021 Double Eagle Very Rare bourbon 20-year is planned for release.
The age statement on this limited release bourbon doubles that of their standard offering.
Eagle Rare itself has a 10-year age statement. While Eagle Rare 17 represents a 17-year old bourbon from the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. Both of those offerings are becoming more difficult to find, with the 17-year growing to pure unicorn status.
The 2021 Double Eagle Very Rare features one key difference from the prior two releases.
This whiskey will have the highest proof of all releases to date. Previously, it had been a 90 proof offering, which matches that of Eagle Rare 10-year. Now it moves up to 101 proof, which is in line with the Eagle Rare 17-year bourbon.
This Double Eagle Very Rare 2021 release aged gracefully on the lowest floors of Buffalo Trace Distillery Warehouses.
Not only is the bourbon impressive, it’s crystal decanter and silver display case will take unboxing to the next level.
The silver presentation box alone alone makes this a standout in your bourbon collection. Meanwhile, it also includes an individually numbered letter of authenticity, suggesting your whiskey collection probably shouldn’t be compared to ours.
This very limited 20-year-old bourbon whiskey also features two crystal glass eagles in the Double Eagle decanter.
